Kingsmead - Newbuild Garden
This lovely little garden is an unusual shape, sitting on a very windy corner of the new Kingsmead Estate in Wooler. The brief called for lots of flowers, plenty of texture and something ‘going on’ for much of the season.
Again, strong yet simple hard landscaping framed blocks of hardy perennial and shrub planting. Most plants had to work hard for their place, ideally offering more than one point of interest.
Rosa rugosa brought flowers followed by orange hips into winter. Crab apple ‘Red Sentinel’ provided spring blossom, followed by long-lasting bright red fruit. Catmint added soft grey foliage and long-lasting blue flowers, while variegated dogwood and red-edged Hebes brought structure, evergreen interest and flowers attractive to bees.
By the end of the first season, the garden was already well on its way to looking established.
