Courtyard @ No. 6 Gallery, Wooler
The owner of No.6 Gallery on the High Street in Wooler wanted to create a private courtyard garden at the back of the gallery.
As you will see from the photographs, there was very little there apart from two large drystone wall raised beds. The space had been many things in the past, one of which would have been a merchant’s yard, which perhaps explains all the compacted debris we unearthed beneath the surface.
Access was difficult. We had to take down new fence panels to allow access for the digger and ourselves, generously granted by a neighbour.
I designed a ‘Sunny Side’ border and a more shaded ‘Woodland’ border.
We uncovered an old brick pathway running through the middle of the sunny border, which the owner decided to keep. We renovated it, added a curved end and created stone steps to provide access onto the pathway, allowing for a small seating area nestled against the old stone boundary wall and shed.
I undertook the complete design and project management of this job. Apart from the groundworks, carried out with the help of local digger specialist Graham Cross, one member of my team and I completed all the hard landscaping and planting.
I love this little space, and so do the owner and her friends.
